Meyersville FD received an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from FEMA for $117,714.28, to replace our 16 Self-contained Breathing Apparatus(SCBA) and face pieces. Our current SCBA’s constantly break when in use because they’re old and outdated. The manufacturer no longer services or carries parts for them. The NFPA 1981 standard states, SCBA are out of compliance when more than 3 standards behind or the manufacturer no longer services them. The current NFPA standard of 1981 is 2018, the accepted standard of NFPA 1981 is the 2007 standard, our old SCBA’s were 2002 standard. The NFPA updates the standard every 5-6 years, this ensures that the SCBA are updated with the newest safety features for firefighters.
The SCBA is a vital piece of equipment that we have to have to enter any IDLH (immediately dangerous to life and health) environment. Without this vital equipment Meyersville FD could not serve the community effectively. MFD is extremely excited and grateful to FEMA for this award. MFD wouldn’t be able to afford to replace this equipment without their help. The AFG grant is extremely competitive, MFD had to compete with every Fire Department in the country who submitted an application. The total funding FEMA provides to this grant is $328 million. Each department is then responsible to pay a match of 5-10 %. Thank you FEMA for this funding!!
